Overview

Sissu, also known as Khwaling, is the first major village you encounter after exiting the Atal Tunnel into the Lahaul Valley. Located at an altitude of 3,120 meters, it has shifted from a quiet summer transit point to a premier year-round destination for snow lovers. "Sissu Waterfall (Palden Lhamo Dhar)" A massive cascade that freezes into a giant ice pillar during peak winter, offering a surreal sight from the highway.

  • The "Pahari" Palette: The food scene is a mix of trekker fuel and local delicacies. Don't leave without trying Siddu (steamed bread stuffed with poppy seeds/nuts and dipped in ghee) or a bowl of spicy Thukpa to beat the mountain chill.

  • Winter (October to February): Best for witnessing snowfall and engaging in winter sports like skiing; temperatures can drop below -5°C.

The Atal Tunnel is a 9.02 km engineering marvel that has fundamentally changed travel in the Himalayas. It bypasses the treacherous Rohtang Pass, cutting the journey from Manali to the Lahaul Valley from 4 hours to just about 30 minutes.
